MM--I picked up Listening Walls as per your suggestion. I had read Ross Macdonald earlier in life. The Millar brought me to Tom Nolan's Ross Macdonald which you must have read. Atypically, I am left without words in reaction to that family.
And Fremlin can easily be found at abebooks for under $4 including shipping.


Nice post. I loved Celia Fremlin's novels which I read as a teenager. I borrowed them from my local library, in those distinctive yellow Gollancz jackets.


And those who like Celia Fremlin might also like Margaret Yorke -- another underrated and much out-of-print 'mystery' novelist. Like Fremlin and sometimes Ruth Rendell, she's great with the whydunnits. Her explorations into the psyche are at once effortless and spot on.
