6 is key but will probably only happen if some politician gets on board; it's a crusade that could really make a name for some ambitious pol. Sell it with a good PR tag, "The rule that's killing publishing" or some such attention getter. All solid ideas; 4 is pretty easy to establish without much cost. I wouldn't hold much hope out for 3 although it's the most important. The novel I finished in 2009 is finally coming out this year. Publishing does everything too slowly.

7. Publishers need to publish books within a maximum six month period. There's no reason at all for it to take longer than that.

I agree with all these points, especially 1, 3, and 6, with the exception of 5. Who wants his book to be marked as not quite good enough for traditional publishing, and pay for the privilege? Didn't Penguin offer something like this with Book Country? The response from writers was not enthusiastic.

Perhaps I'll write a post, What Can We [Writers] Do? And the main thing would be to realize that without us, there would be no publishing industry, therefore we should demand equitable contracts and a bigger slice of the pie.

@K.A.: The returns system (#6) is publishing's self-inflicted wound. It's not something a politician can do anything about even if he/she was interested in doing so. It will take the Big 6 as a group to impose it on retailers. Ultimately most everyone will benefit, but in the interim the change will have knock-on effects on how books are wholesaled and sold.

1. duh
2. make video promos that interest people (William Ray Johnson, julian smith, etc)
3. No. Look to the classics. 50 shades = Beauty and the Beast; Hunger Games = All Quiet on the Western Front.
4. Why not talk to readers? We don't bite.
5. A) INDEPENDENT not Self. B) Why, what value would you offer an indie? C) Publishers only take on projects to make a buck -- that is their fiduciary responsibility to investors.
6. duh
