I'm worried that you put readers sixth on the list of people editors have to please, when they should come first. I think this explains some of the problems the publishing industry faces today, and why my daughter, a keen reader, said scathingly there were no proper books in the bookshop window her bus paused beside.

With my jewellery and silver, I know that if I like something I’ve made, others (not necessarily everyone) will too. Agents and publishers used to trust their gut in the same way, I believe, but now it’s all about marketing and trends to the detriment of the reader. The success of so many self-publishers who failed to get a mainstream contract demonstrates just how wrong publishers’ judgment can be.

Spoken like a self-published author, very FEW of whom achieve success.

Jack, how many traditionally published authors achieve success?

Go on Kindleboards and you will find quite a lot of self-publishers who are doing well. Look for the Thousand Books a Month threads.

Ok, Lexi, you have a point here. Very few writers achieve success no matter who or what publishes them. Here's the New York Times top 35 titles, ebook and print combined. I counted 6 self-pubbed on the list (17%), a number which frankly shocked me. Pretty darn good. But as a writer with almost no statistical chance of ever hitting that list, I'd rather go with the 83% shot.
