MEH. I just finished a book like that. I got to the end, and it just didn't do much of anything to end in a memorable way.

Speaking as a writer, I realized soon after sending my novel out to agents that it was eliciting a "nice job" from most of them and in this market, that just isn't good enough. Actually, I think I knew that even before sending it out. With my current novel, I'm going all out for a "wow".

I've got two to add:

OH, MAN. That's when something at the very end stretches believability beyond the breaking point. And not in a good way.

Like if on the last two pages, we learn the protagonist's sidekick actually speaks fluent Cantonese and could have prevented the assassination if only he wasn't out of the room getting a soda in the second scene.

And: THUD!

That's the sound of a book hitting the wall, after a tremendous OH, MAN! Thomas Harris's Hannibal comes to mind.

Like you, a WOW is my ultimate compliment.
